The Ibishu Covet is a sub-compact three-door hatchback produced by Ibishu from 1987 to 1991. It is equipped with a high-revving, single-overhead-cam 1.5L I4 engine by default, which outputs around 80 horsepower with its standard carburetor (and about 100 HP with the fuel injectors, as in the DXi/LXi).

The light weight and front-wheel-drive layout of the Covet result in fast, responsive handling. It has a tendency for mechanical oversteer and power understeer, resulting in balanced, tossable behavior. In terms of safety, the Covet is relatively unsafe. During low-speed collisions, the soft body of the vehicle will absorb the impact very well, but the majority of the vehicle's structure lacks the rigidity to keep it in shape during an impact, meaning parts of the car may crumple inwards, potentially injuring occupants.

It is the only available vehicle in the Tech Demo.

Development

Your typical 80s Japanese FWD hatchback. Lightweight (less than 1000kg), nimble, cheap, and hilariously unsafe. The front suspension is a rather sophisticated double wishbone setup, but the rear is a poorly tuned multilink arrangement which allows the car to tripod on command.

—gabester, Devblog, 15 August 2012

The Covet was first seen in a video on BeamNG's official YouTube channel, uploaded on July 7, 2012.[1] Shortly after, a post on the official devblog was made providing details and development screenshots.[2] It was released on August 5, 2013 with verison 0.3, the initial public release of the game.

The Covet's configurations have changed greatly over time. Originally, a "Sport" configuration was included, which later became the "Race" as a more factory-optioned version of the Sport took its place.[3] Both would later be superseded by the "1.5 ZXi" and "Track," respectively. The "Skidplate" configuration and the accompanying skidplates were added in the 0.3.7.4 update, and the "Beater" configuration and its custom parts were added in the 0.4.3.2 update.

The Covet was remodeled twice, first in the 0.16 update[4] and later in the 0.17 update.[5]

Trivia

  • The Covet was the first official vehicle with custom engine sounds. They were added in the 0.4.2 update, as part of advancing audio development. New sounds were added in the 0.10 update, two years later.
  • The Covet shares its engine textures and factory trim level names (DX, LX, ZX) with the first generation Ibishu Pessima, as they were manufactured during the same time period.
